Thai films guide

It may not be as popular as the Hollywood blockbusters, but the Thai film industry produces some truly vibrant and impressive stories with a great narrative style and well organized structure.

Thai movies cover a variety of genres from emotions to comedy and love stories. Though at times the heroines’ cries become unrealistic, over the years, the thai film industry has matured into producing better films!

So if you want to try out some of the thai flicks, here is a list of 3 movies which, according to me, belong to different genres and are worth a watch.

Sia Dai: this film gives and insight to the lives of four young girls left by their parents. How they face life’s hardships and resort to the black marklet of prostitution, form the crux of this pseudo documentary style film.

Kun Pan: it’s a love triangle between a psychopathic maniac and a liar and a Thai warrior with mystic powers. Seduction and infidelity loom large in this film where the love genre is mixed with war and betrayal.

Shutter : this one is for all those who are daring enough to see a horror flick. It’s a story of strange things that start occurring with a couple after they hit someone on a particular night. How they go about resolving the mystery forms the gist of the film. Though the film is quite predictable, it has an eerie, creepy feeling to it which makes the film enjoyable.

There is even a longer list of great Thai films which you shall like to explore. So just let me know and I shall revert back with the ones which will interest you.

Religion of Thailand

Posted in General, Guide, Religion June 14, 2008

Thailand is a land of mixed cultures. People are given full freedom to pursue whichever religion they believe in. Infact religion plays a pivotal role in every Thai’s life. It is the building block of their social lives.

Out of the estimated 55 million Thaïs, 95% are true followers of Buddhism and believe in the cycle of birth and rebirth. About 4% are Muslims, who reside mostly in the southern parts like Narathiwat, yala, Pattani and Satun. They form the biggest of the minority community.

Thailand also has approximately 0.5% Christians and about that many Hindus, Sikhs and other religions combined. The King and the Thai government have given complete freedom to everyone to follow his/her own faith. In fact a violation of this rule is considered disrespect to the Majesty.

Thus, it can be rightly said that Thailand believes in the motto “Unity In Diversity” and even with so many people following different religions, it has always stood as one in complete peace and harmony.
