Youngsters to help water supply for hill tribes

Posted in General, Guide, News May 11, 2009

The population of northern Thailand, for centuries, has been composed of ethnic groups which are known as hill tribes. And the largest among them is the Karen group, its population about 40,000 and further 8million lives across the border.

Youngsters of the school Gordonstoun are helping the supply of water for hill tribes. Up to 20 pupils will be laying pipes and water tanks to help an international project that is providing clear and running water to remote village. These school pupils are gearing up for a June expedition to meet the Karen hill tribes in the mountains of north Thailand. They will be leaving with the villagers for three weeks of hard labor with this International Service Project. Moreover these youngsters will be sampling the villager’s culture and sharing their way of life.

In fact Jamie Paxton was very much inspired by listening to students who had been on similar projects in the past. He is helping run a truck shop in his boarding house to raise funds towards the need for equipment and pipes for the project. He wants the project to go on smoothly and help other people   too, both for the feel-good factor and because he felt that it is his moral duty to do so.
